Colby Smith

Colby began his aviation career at an early age, starting flight training at 14 and soloing on his 16th birthday. Following high school, he attended AG-Flight, where he specialized in aerial application. He began his professional career as an agricultural pilot in 2009 at just 19 years old and has since accumulated more than 8,000 flight hours, primarily in demanding, low-level, high-performance operating environments.

Over the course of his career, Colby has developed extensive experience in aerial firefighting, with a particular focus on safe, effective mission execution and integration across flight and ground operations. His leadership emphasizes predictability, consistency, and disciplined decision-making, creating an environment where crews can operate with confidence and clear expectations.

A Certified Flight Instructor, Office of Aviation Services (OAS)-carded Pilot Trainer, Air Tractor Authorized Instructor, and instructor with the National Aerial Firefighting Academy (NAFA), Colby brings considerable technical and instructional expertise to Single Engine Airtanker operations. Drawing on this experience, he developed the Momentum Heatwave Training Program to standardize and strengthen pilot transitions into the platform. His work supports greater pilot proficiency, operational consistency, and mission safety.

As Chief Pilot, Colby places a strong emphasis on crew engagement, communication, and professional development. He recognizes that operational success depends not only on individual proficiency, but also on the strength of the team behind each mission. Through his leadership, he works to foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement throughout the organization.
